10.2.4. The Photon’s Distinctive Position

The photon’s distinctive position in The Mechanism follows from its ontological placement. Before manifestation, the photon is KNOWING: the current position in the relational landscape where the reading of an INTERSPACE begins. The manifest event is the “shadow” of THE INTERSPACE, as it is traversed as SENSATION in the Experience Circle.

The photon is therefore not a transfer from abstract relation to physical object. KNOWING does not pass through the horizon. The reading has a manifest course and an abstract result: THE SENSATION is nulled, while a new SEPARATION is established and becomes part of the subsequent relational landscape.

In The Mechanism, electrons, protons and other persistent particle patterns are sought to be understood as organised attractor structures. These, too, have their foundation in KNOWING. The distinction between them and the photon therefore cannot be described as the distinction between “physical things” and “abstract relations”. The task is to show how different organisations give rise to different manifest properties.

Rest mass is one of these properties. In The Mechanism, mass is understood as qualia, originating in the fundamental impulse and the course of reading. The hypothesis is that persistent particle organisation entails a particular form of reading cost. How this gives rise to rest mass, and why the photon does not appear with the same property, is still being derived. Stability alone is therefore not a sufficient explanation of mass.

The photoelectric effect provides a concrete phenomenon that this understanding must be able to explain. When light causes an electron to be released from a material, physics describes specific relationships between frequency, work function and the electron’s kinetic energy. The Mechanism seeks the explanation in changes in the relational landscape and the readings these make relevant. Such an explanation must show both how the event arises and why it acquires precisely the observed properties.

For now, the photon’s distinctive position consists in this ontological placement: it denotes the current position of reading in KNOWING, while the experienced event arises through the shadow manifestation of THE INTERSPACE. The further EM derivation must show how this foundation gives rise to the photon’s distinctive physical properties.

What is fundamental is SEPARATIONS and their relations in KNOWING. What we experience as particles, force and mass must be explained through the organisation and reading of this foundation.
