7.1.2. Space as a Local Orientation Field

Space is not an empty vessel waiting for things to be placed in it. In The Mechanism, local manifest space arises through the complete PANORAMIC GAZE of FOCUS during each EC reading.

FOCUS remains fixed at THE HORIZON. THE FOCAL GAZE follows the manifest course of THE SENSATION, while THE PANORAMIC GAZE simultaneously encompasses the whole of the current THIS. The two gazes are simultaneous and inseparable properties of the one FOCUS.

Focal reading provides a definite direction. But for what is current to be seen from an independent perspective, an orthogonal orientation is also required. The O-principle further requires that no possible aspect of what is current be omitted. THE PANORAMIC GAZE therefore encompasses the complete orientation field around the actuality.

This orientation field is local manifest space.

Space emerges during the very first EC reading. A landscape of fully formed attractors or stable physical objects is not required beforehand. How the complete PANORAMIC GAZE gives rise to three-dimensionality is explained in the next section.

The local orientation space must also be distinguished from the geometry established in KNOWING. Each completed EC produces a SEPARATION with a polar orientation. SEPARATIONS enter into relations with one another and form the geometric structure of THE SOURCE. Through Attractor Dynamics, AE, the organisation is understood as MEANINGS in the emergence bands.

The later experience of particular distances, shapes, positions and surroundings rests on this relational foundation. THE PANORAMIC GAZE brings forth the local orientation space during reading; the organisation of KNOWING provides the foundation for which spatial relationships are experienced.

“Here” and “there” are perspective-dependent. Each local perspective has its particular relations to the current landscape. FOCUS does not need to be moved physically between perspectives. It is the view and the current subject of reading that differ.

What we experience as a continuous physical space is the continuous manifest appearance of local formations of space, organised through the relations in KNOWING. There is no independent global space into which all experiences are subsequently placed.

Time and space thus have their primitive origin in the same EC event. The successive reading of THE FOCAL GAZE brings forth local time, while the simultaneous complete PANORAMIC GAZE brings forth local space. These are different functions within one coherent experience, not an alternation between two backgrounds.
