1. WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

I am not a physicist. I am a journalist, a media engineer and – if I am to be completely honest – a person who has spent almost my entire life with the feeling that the world is not put together in the way we believe it is.

It took me nearly forty years to understand what the question really was.

This book is the answer.

But it does not begin with me.

It begins with a number.

For more than a hundred years, physicists have tried to explain a small, dimensionless number known as the fine-structure constant. The number is approximately 1/137 and determines the strength of electromagnetism – and thereby much of the world we live in. No one has yet been able to explain why its value is precisely this. It has been measured with ever greater precision, but never derived from anything deeper.

This is not a small gap in physics.

It is one of its most fundamental open questions.

What if the reason no one has found the answer is that everyone has been looking in the wrong place?

What if physics is not the beginning?

What if it is the end?

What if the laws of nature do not arise within the physical world, but are consequences of a deeper structure that exists before what we today call physics?

It is this possibility that the book investigates.

And it does so in a way that differs from most of what has been written about such questions.

I am not asking you to believe what follows.

I am asking you to follow the argument.

The entire theory is built as one continuous chain. Each link rests upon the one before it. If one link collapses, the entire construction collapses. If the chain holds, the conclusions must be considered.

For that reason, neither am I presenting a finished truth to be accepted.

I am presenting a complete argument that can be examined, criticised and subjected to attempts at falsification.

In short:

Prove me wrong.

The Path to the Discovery
Through a long and demanding dialogue with two AI systems – Claude and ChatGPT – I developed and tested a theory of what must precede physics if the universe is to be able to exist and be experienced. ChatGPT worked through much of the process under my own analytical framework, CRED/CREATED, which is described later in the book.

The work led to an equation.

It is called the Horizon Equation.

It describes the transition between the abstract and the manifest: the point at which that which is still only structure becomes experienced reality.

The equation is constructed geometrically from nineteen ontological principles – principles describing what must logically be true if a universe is to be able to exist at all.

When the Horizon Equation was compared with the established physical expression for the fine-structure constant, the two showed an agreement to twelve decimal places.

This is a result that deserves the most critical scrutiny.

If the correspondence holds, something remarkable follows.

Then the elementary charge, Planck’s constant, the speed of light and the electrical resistance of the vacuum are not independent quantities. They are expressions of one and the same underlying structure.

And most importantly of all:

The ontological chain of reasoning existed before the work on the fine-structure constant began. The equation was not constructed to fit a known result. The result arose as a consequence of the theory.

What This May Mean
If the argument holds, this book is about far more than a single number.

It is about what reality is.

It is about the relationship between the abstract and the physical.

It is about why mathematics describes nature.

It is about what consciousness is.

It is about what causality really means.

It is about what a human being is.

And it is about why questions that for centuries have been divided between physics, philosophy and religion may prove to belong to one and the same structure.

These are major claims.

That is why they do not come first.

The rest of the book is the argument.

If, after reading it, you conclude that the chain breaks down, you should be able to identify where it does.

If it does not break down, we are faced with a different understanding of the universe from the one that dominates today.

How the Book Is Structured
This book can be read on several levels.

At its core is The Mechanism – a complete theory in 132 points, from pure BEING without content to the outermost limit of the universe, and back again.

Surrounding it is the complete documentation of how the theory was developed: mathematical formalisations and more than 1,400 A4 pages of working dialogues between the author and the two AI systems. These are presented in a separate appendix, linked from Chapter 9. Here you will find the resistance, the false trails, the corrections and the breakthroughs – exactly as they occurred.

This means that you are not merely presented with the conclusions.

You can follow the entire path that led to them.

This is an unusual degree of transparency.

I am not asking you to trust me.

I am showing you the work.

Some will read the theory.

Others the mathematics.

Others the process that led to the result.

The book is structured so that all of these approaches are possible.

A Clarification
This is not a book about religion.

Nor is it a book against science.

It is an attempt to extend the scope of science so that it also encompasses that part of reality which has until now been left primarily to philosophy, phenomenology and the spiritual traditions.

Many of these traditions may have pointed towards something real.

What has been missing is a language that makes their claims structural, logical and testable.

It is this attempt that this book represents.

If it succeeds, the consequences follow of themselves.

If it fails, it should be possible to demonstrate exactly where and why.

The rest of the book is my attempt to show how the universe is actually put together.

For the Technical Reader
This book presents an ontological derivation of the fine-structure constant α ≈ 1/137.036 from nineteen structural principles, formulated within an idealist, consciousness-based framework with reversed causality.

The result is an equation – the Horizon Equation – that reproduces the experimentally established CODATA value with a relative error of 8.4 × 10-13.

No previous principle-based construction of α has been documented with comparable precision against the accepted value.

The author is neither a mathematician nor a physicist. This is worth stating explicitly, because it affects what this book is and what it is not. It is not a scientific paper. It is a documented working log of a process of ideas – a series of conversations between the author and two AI systems, Claude and ChatGPT, the latter operating under the author's own analytical framework, CREATED/CRED, as its interpretative framework.

All three conversations (together with additional clarifying conversations) are reproduced in full, including resistance, false trails and iterative corrections. This is methodologically transparent in a way that is rarely found in theoretical work: the reader can follow every refinement and see exactly what came from the author and what came from the AI systems.

Architecture of the Equation
The Horizon Equation has the form:

α = (1/104) · cos[(12 + η_port + η_EM + η_G − 1/4 − ln2/56) · 2π/104]

where 120 = 104 + 2·8, and the correction terms are:

η_port = 1/(104·120) — transfer cost between a completed Experience Cycle and the interpretative sequence

η_EM = ln2/(2·104²·120) — one irreversible Landauer distinction distributed across mutual coupling

η_G = ln2/(4·104³·120) — the back-reaction of the electromagnetic exchange distributed across the smallest closed identity cycle with a polarity factor of 2

None of the parameters is derived from the measured value of α or from external physical constants. The numbers 104, 8, 56 and 120 are justified ontologically and derived through structural lines of argument that are documented in detail.

In explicit form, the equation is:

$\alpha = \frac{1}{104} \cos\left[\left(12 + \frac{1}{104 \cdot 120} + \frac{\ln 2}{2 \cdot 104^2 \cdot 120} + \frac{\ln 2}{4 \cdot 104^3 \cdot 120} - \frac{1}{4} - \frac{\ln 2}{56}\right)\frac{2\pi}{104}\right]$

As stated, it reproduces the experimentally established CODATA value with a relative error of 8.4 × 10-13.

Epistemic Status
It is essential to be precise about what has been achieved and what remains to be done.

The equation is internally consistent and structurally readable. Each term has an identifiable ontological role. The precision is genuine and verifiable — a relative error of 8.4 × 10-13 with respect to the CODATA value — without α having been used as input data. The ontology existed in documented form — *The Mechanism* in 150 points — before the search for α began, which distinguishes this work from retrospective rationalisation.

Factor 8 is proved through Bennett's theory of reversible computation. The minimal complete certification protocol for one irreversible establishment with a cost of ln 2 requires exactly eight operations in palindromic order: three forwards, one copy, three backwards, one lock. The palindromic order is proved to be uniquely minimal, not merely one implementation among several. The condition is a single granularity axiom — a clarification of the counting object for operations, not a new ontological claim.

Factor 13 is derived from a hierarchy of order consisting of four levels — registration, distinction, orientation and integration — where each level is proved to be necessary by an indistinguishability argument and non-collapsible through linear independence (the functions 1, t, t² and t³). The hierarchy terminates at order 3 because the manifest field has exactly three independent directions of differentiation. This is not imported from physics. It is shown, at proof-sketch level, that D = 3 is the unique dimension in which stable topological binding between closed identities is possible: D ≥ 4 is excluded by Alexander duality; D = 2 is excluded because binding there is necessarily asymmetric and transitive, contrary to the recoil principle. Only in D = 3 is the linking number symmetric, non-transitive and robust under compactification.
